Buying a TV is a big decision and with so many choices available, it can be hard to know where to start. At HBH Woolacotts, we want to make your experience as smooth as possible. What Size TV Should You Buy?
Getting the right size TV is about more than just what fits on your unit – it’s about optimal viewing distance and room size.
TV Size | Ideal Viewing Distance |
32″ | 4 – 6 feet |
43″ | 5 – 7 feet |
55″ | 7 – 9 feet |
65″ | 8 – 10+ feet |
75″ | 11+ feet |
Top Tip: Always measure the space before you buy, especially if wall mounting. Need help? We offer measurement advice and wall bracket installation.
Screen Resolution – HD, 4K or 8K?
Resolution refers to the number of pixels that make up the image on your screen. Full HD and 1080p are still available on some smaller TVs and are perfectly suitable for casual viewing. However, most of the TVs we sell are 4K Ultra HD, which offers four times the detail of HD and is now the standard for most streaming services, gaming consoles and digital content. For those seeking the absolute cutting-edge, 8K TVs offer an even higher resolution, but it’s worth noting that 8K content is still quite limited. For now, 4K provides an outstanding balance of quality, performance and price.
- HD (1080p): Good for smaller screens or bedrooms.
- 4K Ultra HD: The new standard – sharper, clearer and ideal for most homes.
- 8K: Future-proof tech for larger screens, but content is still limited.

What’s the Difference Between LED, QLED and OLED?
The type of display technology a TV uses can make a big difference to picture quality. LED TVs are the most common and affordable option, offering great performance for everyday viewing. QLED, which stands for Quantum Dot LED, uses a special layer to produce more vibrant colours and brighter images, making it a strong choice for bright rooms. OLED technology – found on premium TVs – provides exceptional contrast with truly deep blacks and vivid colours. It’s ideal for film lovers or anyone seeking the best possible viewing experience. If you’d like to compare them in person, feel free to visit your local HBH Woolacotts showroom and see the difference for yourself.

LED
LED TVs are a great all-round choice. They use backlit panels to produce bright, vibrant images and are available in a wide range of sizes and prices. Perfect for everyday viewing, they offer solid picture quality and energy efficiency, making them a reliable option for most households.

QLED
QLED TVs take things up a notch by using Quantum Dot technology to enhance colour and brightness. You’ll notice deeper contrasts and more lifelike tones, especially in brighter rooms. Ideal for sports, movies and gaming, QLEDs offer a premium viewing experience with long-lasting performance.

OLED
OLED TVs deliver the ultimate picture quality. Each pixel lights up independently, allowing for true blacks, stunning contrast, and incredible detail. This makes them perfect for dark rooms and film lovers who want cinema-level visuals at home. OLEDs also have super-slim designs, adding a sleek, modern look to your space.

Smart Features – What Can Your TV Do?
Today’s Smart TVs do much more than show your favourite channels. Almost every TV we stock includes built-in streaming apps like Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer and YouTube, letting you enjoy on-demand content with just a few clicks. Many models also support voice control, so you can use Alexa or Google Assistant to change channels, search for shows, or adjust the volume. If you like to share videos or photos from your phone, look for models with screen mirroring capabilities. And if you’re into gaming, certain TVs include dedicated modes to reduce lag and make the most of your console’s performance.

Smart Apps
Smart TVs come loaded with a wide range of built-in apps, giving you instant access to your favourite streaming services like Netflix, Disney+, Prime Video, BBC iPlayer, YouTube and more – all at the touch of a button. Whether you’re catching up on the latest series, streaming live sports, or listening to music, everything’s ready to go straight from your TV.

Voice Assistant
Many modern TVs come with voice assistant technology built in, making it easier than ever to control your screen hands-free. Some models include Alexa, Google Assistant or Bixby, allowing you to adjust the volume, change channels, or search for content using just your voice. Others can connect seamlessly to your existing smart home setup, so your TV becomes part of your wider connected home; perfect for turning on the lights, checking the weather or controlling other devices, all from your sofa.

Screen Mirroring
Screen mirroring is a handy feature that lets you share content from your phone, tablet or laptop directly to your TV screen. Many models come with Chromecast and/or Apple AirPlay built in, making it easy to stream photos, videos, music or even presentations without needing extra cables. Whether you’re showing holiday snaps to the family or casting a YouTube video from your phone, it’s a quick and seamless way to enjoy your content on the big screen.
Our team can set up your Smart TV during installation, connect it to Wi-Fi and walk you through the features.
What Else Should You Look For?
There are a few extra features worth considering, depending on how you use your TV. HDR, or High Dynamic Range, brings out more detail in dark and bright scenes and is especially useful for movies and high-end shows. A higher refresh rate – usually measured in hertz – means smoother motion, which is noticeable when watching fast-paced sport or playing video games. It’s also a good idea to check how many HDMI or USB ports the TV has, especially if you plan to connect soundbars, consoles, or Blu-ray players. If you prefer a clean, modern look, we offer professional wall mounting services, including bracket fitting and cable management.

Gaming Mode
While smart TVs deliver impressive visuals and vibrant colours, not all are designed with fast-paced gaming in mind. Their advanced image processing can sometimes introduce a slight delay – not ideal when every millisecond counts in the final moments of a race or battle! That’s where Game Mode comes in. TVs with this feature are specially tuned to reduce input lag, boost refresh rates, minimise motion blur and optimise picture settings for smoother, more responsive gameplay.

Enhanced Audio
Some modern TVs don’t just deliver stunning visuals, they sound incredible too. With advanced built-in audio technology, they bring cinematic soundtracks to life, create immersive 3D surround sound, and add depth with rich, punchy bass you can actually feel. It’s a powerful audio experience that puts you right at the heart of the action.

Gallery Mode
No matter your setup, a TV is just as much a part of your room as any piece of furniture. When it’s not in use, certain models can turn that blank screen into something beautiful. With Gallery Mode, you can display artwork, personal photos, or stylish visuals to enhance your space, adding a decorative touch that blends technology seamlessly into your home.

Connectivity
Your TV is the centre of your home entertainment setup, so it needs to be ready for everything. From Blu-ray players and gaming consoles to sound systems, having the right ports and connections is essential. Look out for models with multiple HDMI and USB inputs, so you can easily plug in all your favourite devices without constantly switching cables.

HDR
HDR is a key feature to look for if you want the best possible picture quality. It enhances the contrast and colour range on your screen, making bright scenes look more vivid and dark areas more detailed. You’ll notice more lifelike images, whether it’s sunlight glinting off water or the subtle shadows in a dramatic film. There are different formats like HDR10, Dolby Vision and HLG, but they all work to bring out extra depth and realism in whatever you’re watching.

Processor
A TV’s processor plays a big role in how smooth, sharp and responsive your viewing experience feels. It’s responsible for everything from upscaling lower quality content to 4K, to reducing motion blur during fast action scenes and optimising sound and picture settings in real time. If you’re a film lover, a powerful processor helps deliver richer contrast and finer detail. For gamers, it ensures minimal lag and fast response times and for everyday viewers, it keeps menus slick and streaming apps running without delays.
