Freeview Retune

IMPORTANT changes to Digital TV Freeview Transmissions across Cornwall & Devon transmitters on WEDNESDAY 19TH JUNE 2019

On Wednesday 19th June there will be some major changes to how Freeview digital TV is being transmitted from transmitters across Cornwall & Devon. The Huntshaw Cross transmitter will see changes to the entire transmission. The Caradon Hill and Redruth transmitters and some associated relays will also be affected.

Why are these changes happening?

Following a decision by Government, some airwaves used by Freeview are being reallocated to allow for the future development of new 5G mobile broadband services. Transmitters across the UK are being updated as part of a major engineering programme being carried out between now and 2020.
Viewer support is being delivered under a Code of Service in line with Government policy, which can include aerial adjustment where necessary. You can find out more about this at

What’s happening?

Freeview channels will be moving frequency at the affected transmitters and you will no longer be able to watch some or all of your TV channels until your set has been retuned. Services such as YouView, BT TV or TalkTalk may also be affected. This will be the case for all areas where the changes are occurring. Look out for on-screen messages, which will let you know if you need to retune.

If you complete a retune and are still missing channels, then it is possible that you may require a new aerial. Certain band aerials and in particular older products may not be able to receive the new frequencies. Freeview will be able to advise on this.

Please note this is not specific to any one manufacturer and it is NOT a fault with your receiving equipment. Any retune required or remedial aerial work will NOT be covered under any manufacturer warranty. This is a change in transmission being carried out by Freeview.

How do I retune?

You can retune your TV via the on-screen menus using your remote control - refer to the instruction book for your TV if needed.

Information on retuning is available on the Freeview TV changes website. Alternatively, you can call the Freeview Advice Line on 0808 100 0288. This line will be able to offer you help with retuning as well as information on what FREE channels are available to you. Viewers may be eligible for free in-home support.

Please also feel free to contact your local branch of HBH Woolacotts, who will endeavour to answer your queries and have made the following provisions to assist;

  • We have tried to ensure all of our local stores have as many staff as possible so we can offer assistance over the phone. We will help as best we can and we may be able to talk through how to retune your TV so you can watch TV as normal without requiring a physical call out and the subsequent charges.
  • We are offering a half price call out service at only £23 to try and assist customers who are unable to retune their TVs manually or with over the phone assistance. We have tried to keep as many free slots in our service diaries as practical so we can attend to these call outs as quickly as possible.
  • If your aerial is affected and you are unable to receive signal at all and our retune call-out service will not resolve this, we have tried to keep our aerial engineers diaries as clear as possible for the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. This work will need to be carry out at full rate of £40 labour + parts however the original £23 call out service will be waived and put towards the cost of the aerial work.

Please note that we expect our phones will be busy during this time, particularly in the North Cornwall and North Devon area, so please bear with us.
